Physical Science
The 8th grade science curriculum focuses on Physical Science. The students are afforded the opportunity to study the living world that God created for us. This year’s studies will be broken into four units.
Unit One: Motion and Forces
During this unit, students will learn about Newton’s laws of motion. Through scripted problems and lab activities the students will calculate speed, slope, acceleration and velocity.
Unit Two: Sound and Light
This unit focuses on the characteristics of waves, sound, and light. The students will learn how waves travel and interact, how sound is produced, travels and measured, and how light is reflected, refracted and interpreted by the eyes and brain.
Unit Three: Magnetism and Electricity
This unit focuses on the properties of magnetism and electricity. The students will learn how objects become magnetized, how the earth’s magnetic field is used, and how electromagnets are formed. The students will also learn how electric current travels, how series and parallel circuits are formed, and how electricity is measured.
Unit Four: Introduction to Chemistry
During this unit, students will learn how matter is affected and changed through physical and chemical means. They will learn the basics of how atomic structure and bonding. The unit concludes with a study on acids and bases.
The curriculum meets California and Apostles standards in Physical Science for grade eight. Students will be assessed through written and performance work. The instruction will be balanced between lecture, lab and demonstration.
